This course is based on the premise that literary writing is intrinsically linked to the practice of attentive and critical reading. In this sense, it is assumed that the training of a writer begins, first and foremost, with the formation of a demanding reader, aware of the formal procedures of narrative. Reading (understood as an analytical exercise, attentive to the stylistic, structural, and narrative choices of the text) thus constitutes one of the fundamental tools for the development of fiction writing.

This course unit proposes a critical reflection on the specificities of literary nonfiction, exploring its formal potential, the modes of constructing voice and subjectivity, as well as its ethical implications. In this way, it aims to offer a comprehensive view of the plurality of approaches to literary nonfiction, simultaneously contributing to the construction of a historical and critical perspective on the development of the genre.

The fundamental idea of this curricular unit revolves around defending poetry as a way of resisting a homogenized world based on a rigid conception of identity. Poetry recognizes and helps us live with the fragmentation that characterizes everyone's life—a condition of possibility for it to constitute memory—also working from the fictional nature of borders: from the geographical borders that organize the world into a cartography, to what concerns words themselves.

This course focuses on exploring literary practices that go beyond traditional genres, prioritizing experimental approaches, open creative processes, and forms of writing that result from the free association of ideas, materials, and languages. The discipline proposes a reflection on the expansion of the contemporary literary field, addressing the intersection between text and object, as well as the possibilities of the book as a form of expression.

This course aims to open up student participation in the practice of essay writing as a critical reflection on literary texts. Starting from the premise that literary writing is, in itself, a theoretical and critical act, the course will explore the points of contact between philosophy, essay writing, and fiction. The objective is to provide students with a conceptual repertoire that nourishes their practice, transforming theory into a laboratory of the imagination.

This course aims to equip students with practical and conceptual tools for developing an individual literary project. Serving as a bridge between the content covered in the other courses of the semester, this discipline will focus on monitoring each student's writing process, encouraging the progressive definition of an original project that will form the basis of their final course work.

The concept of dramaturgy has evolved over time, moving away from the classical conception focused exclusively on the study and writing of dramatic texts intended for stage performance. In this sense, this course aims to explore the contemporary concept of dramaturgy and its multiple dimensions, promote critical reflection on creative processes in the performing arts, develop dramatic writing skills and dramaturgical thinking, and foster direct contact with current artistic practices.

This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of poetics in their relationship to cinema. Thus, poiesis should be understood in its etymological root as the pure ability to produce, and not as a literary genre. Similarly, screenwriting should not be understood as the composition of a plot, but as a way of seeing.

This course aims to introduce the historical context of publishing, encompassing key concepts such as the press, the publishing and bookselling market, independent publishing, dissemination and critical reception, among others; to develop skills in conceiving and executing literary projects, from the initial idea to their desired realization, applying basic design and management tools in the context of publishing; and to promote an attentive and critical spirit towards editions and publications in their various aspects.

This course aims to provide students with a diverse range of practices that exist between poetry and visual arts. Throughout the semester, we will explore different forms of dialogue between word and image, including the poetic description of works of art (ekphrasis), visual metaphor, sequential narrative, and hybrid forms such as poetry comics and visual poetry.

The Seminars course, taught in the second semester, consists of a series of meetings with guests from different areas of the literary and publishing field. The course thus complements postgraduate training, promoting dialogue with stakeholders in the areas covered by the program, contributing to broadening students' understanding of the practices, challenges, and possibilities of literary creation in the contemporary context.

This course focuses on the development, deepening, and monitoring of the individual literary project initiated in the first semester. Building upon the materials and working methods already explored in the other course units, students will be encouraged to consolidate their original project, progressively guiding it towards the elaboration of the final manuscript.

Alexandra João Martins holds a degree in Communication Sciences, a master's degree in Artistic Studies from the University of Porto, and is a doctoral candidate in Artistic Studies at FCSH-Universidade Nova de Lisboa, having been a FCT scholarship recipient. She has written for several publications. She collaborated with and was a member of the selection committees for the Curtas Vila do Conde and Porto/Post/Doc festivals. In 2017, she was selected for the Talent Press Rio and, in 2018, she curated the exhibition Como o Sol/Como a Noite, with the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, as part of the retrospective dedicated to António Reis and Margarida Cordeiro at Porto/Post/Doc.

André Tecedeiro (1979) is a poet, playwright, and visual artist. He lives in Lisbon. He graduated in Sculpture and Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, holds a master's degree in Intermedia Visual Arts from the University of Évora, and studied Psychology at the University of Lisbon. He has held more than fifty exhibitions and has been nominated for several awards. His poetry is collected in *A axila de Egon Schiele* (Porto Editora, 2020). His work has been presented in venues such as the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II. He also develops training in the areas of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Cláudia Lucas Chéu (1978) is a writer, poet, and playwright. A columnist for Expresso and short story writer for Público, she is also a lecturer at the University of Évora. Her work spans theatre, poetry, fiction, and essays, with titles such as Glória ou Como Penélope Morreu de Tédio (2011), Nojo (2014), Pornographia (2016), Aqueles Que Vão Morrer (2018), and Confissão (2020), the latter a semi-finalist for the Oceanos Prize. She also published Orlando – Tratado sobre a Dignidade Humana (2022), included in the National Reading Plan. In 2023, she won the Camões literary residency in Maputo. In 2025, she published Escrevo por Vingança à Morte and, more recently, Malparidos and Fazer festas por entre as grades.

Ederval Fernandes (1985) was born in Feira de Santana, Brazil. He is a poet, Portuguese language teacher, and doctoral candidate in Portuguese Studies at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He holds a degree in Vernacular Letters from the Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS), where he was a research fellow in the project Urban Images in Brazilian Literature. He published *O livro conta corrente* (2015) and *Novas ofertas de emprego para Ederval Fernandes* (2018; published in Portugal by Não Edições, 2021). His poetry, marked by attention to the sound of language and the sensitive experience of the word, has been featured in magazines and newspapers in Brazil and Portugal.

João Concha (1980) is the editor of Não (edições). He holds a degree in Architecture from the University of Lisbon and completed a course in Illustration at the Center for Images and Narrative Techniques of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 2006. In this field, he has collaborated with several publishers and collective publications. He received the Gold Medal at the Picture Book Show in 2017, awarded by the American magazine 3x3. He has held solo and group exhibitions of his work since 2007. In 2013, he founded não (edições), one of the most consistent independent poetry publishers in Portugal. Its catalog, organized by collections, features several national and international authors. In 2024, he received a Literary Creation Grant from DGLAB.

João Pedro Vala (1990) was born in Lisbon. He holds a degree in Management and a PhD in Literary Theory from the University of Lisbon, with a thesis on Marcel Proust at the University of Chicago. Grande Turismo (2022), a finalist for the Eça de Queirós Foundation Prize, is his debut novel, followed by Campo Pequeno. He was the first recipient of the Wook Prize in 2025 for this latter novel.

Luís Lima holds a PhD in Philosophy – specializing in Aesthetics – from FCS/Universidade Nova de Lisboa, as a doctoral scholarship holder from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for a co-supervision program at Paris IV – Sorbonne, in the Literature department. He also received a FCT scholarship for a Master's degree in Communication, Contemporary Culture and New Technologies from the same university. He graduated in Communication Sciences with a thesis on the mutual conditioning between criticism and art. He has collaborated as a journalist in several publications (Volta ao Mundo, Revista National Geographic, Arte Ibérica, Arte Capital, etc.). Since April 2023, he has been the founding director of the School of Arts at the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL). He is an Associate Professor at UAL and a guest lecturer at the Escola Superior de Design (ESD) of IPCA, where he teaches, among other courses, Theories of Image, Creative Writing, Communication and Digital Storytelling, and Cyberculture. He is a researcher at LabCom (Communication and Arts) and a collaborator at CEAA (Art and Critical Studies) and the Communication Research Center Nip.Com, at UAL. Since 2016, he has been a member of the Scientific Committee of CONFIA – International Conference on Illustration and Animation within the scope of the Master's program in Illustration and Animation at ESD, IPCA. Since 2018, he has been part of the Selection Committee of the Porto/Post/Doc film festival. He works as a freelance translator in the field of contemporary aesthetic and literary thought (Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Rancière, Georges Didi-Huberman, François Truffaut, Bernard Stiegler, Marie-José Mondzain, Paul Éluard, Pierre Klossowski, Ghérasim Luca, etc.).

Mariano Tomasovic (1993) is a writer, editor, and literary translator. He grew up between Argentina and Portugal and lives in Lisbon, where he co-edits the magazine Limoeiro Real. He holds a master's degree in Journalism from the University of Örebro. He has published poetry, chronicles, and short stories in national and Latin American media. He won the FNAC New Talents Award (2018) and was part of the IPDJ National Showcase of Young Creators (2019). In 2025, he received the Banco Provincia Grand Prize for Literature in Argentina. He is the author of the microfiction book Bartlebyana (2020) and the novel Lo que no vuelve (2025). He writes in Spanish and Portuguese.

Miguel Cardoso (Lisbon, 1976) is a poet and translator, author of nine books of poetry. He translates poetry, fiction, and essays, including works by Anne Boyer, Antonin Artaud, Sean Bonney, Mina Loy, and Kurt Vonnegut. He has also written prefaces and postscripts for some of his translations, including books by Antonin Artaud, Sean Bonney, and Miyo Vestrini. He has taught at DocNomads – International Master's Program in Documentary Film (Lusófona University) since 2013. In recent years, his work has focused on the relationships between literature, photography, translation, and archives, exploring documentary writing practices and hybrid zones between poetry, essay, fiction, and non-fiction. His most recent book, Passengers (Cutelo, 2025), was constructed from old postcards found in Berlin.

Susana Moreira Marques (1976) is the author of the literary non-fiction books *Agora e na hora da nossa morte* (translated into English, French, and Spanish), *Quanto tempo tem um dia*, *Lenços pretos, chapéus de palha e brincos de ouro*, *Terceiro andar sem elevador*, and *O quarto, um livro para a infância*. Her work has been published in magazines such as Granta, Tin House, and Literary Hub, and in media outlets such as Público, Jornal de Negócios, and BBC World Service. She was a columnist for Antena 1 and the newspaper Mensagem. She is co-editor of the literary non-fiction magazine *Mamute*.
