On October 11th, Escola das Artes will host part of the program of the international conference “The Birth (in Images) of African Nations: Media and Decolonizations”.

The program includes a talk by keynote speaker Mariano Mestman from the University of Buenos Aires, who will revisit the meeting “Estates General of Third Cinema”, held in Canada in 1974, where the “new cinemas” and their monitoring of political and cultural struggles in various locations were discussed. This will be followed by presentations by filmmakers Billy Woodberry, dedicated to the interaction with archive materials, and Luciana Fina, who will seek to reflect on Pasolini’s subversive relationships with television as a medium. Maria Emília Tavares, curator and researcher, will also present a presentation on Portuguese and Italian photography on 25 April 1974. Finally, filmmaker Rui Simões and José Manuel Costa, former director of the Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema, will discuss Portuguese political cinema after 25 April in the context of Internationalism, moderated by Maria do Carmo Piçarra.

Organized by Maria do Carmo Piçarra, professor at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa and researcher at ICNOVA, and Giulia Strippoli, researcher at IHC, the conference will take place between October 7th and 11th at Colégio Almada Negreiros, of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and at Escola das Artes - Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa.

At the same time, a film screening will be held at the Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema, based on representations of independence in Italian archives, as well as an artistic meeting on artivism and decolonization at Hangar – Centro de Investigação Artística.
