Filipa Tojal in residence at No Entulho in a partnership between Artworks and the School of Arts

Visual artist Filipa Tojal will be part of the artistic residency program In the Rubble, at the invitation of the School of Arts of the Autonomous University of Lisbon. The residency is scheduled to take place between July and August 2025 at the company's facilities in Póvoa de Varzim.

Filipa Tojal (b. 1993) is a visual artist who lives and works in Porto. She graduated in Fine Arts (Painting) from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP) and completed her Masters in Painting at the Tokyo University of the Arts, in Japan, where she lived for four years. She has participated in artistic residencies in Spain, France, India, Indonesia and Australia, and has presented her work in group and solo exhibitions, both nationally and internationally, with emphasis on the United States, China and Japan. She is currently a PhD candidate in Fine Arts at FBAUP.

Her artistic practice begins with painting and expands to installation, reflecting an intimate and sensitive relationship with space. She explores the landscape through the act of contemplation, where the memory of a place and the direct experience of the present intersect, approaching them through the materiality intrinsic to painting. Her compositions emerge from a process of subtle gradation, displacements and overlaps, in a sensitive research of the elements that surround her. She explores an intuitive and attentive approach to space, where materiality is not limited to painting, but also extends to the objects and territories that surround her.

In turn, the Artistic Residencies in Entulho – RANE -, promoted by Artworks Since 2018, they have been aimed at emerging artists and aim to address unusable or surplus materials from the industry as material for creation. The focus of RANE is the creation of an exploratory platform open to different agents, which is open to welcoming original or ongoing projects. The aim of this program is to stimulate artistic production in an industrial environment and create a learning environment for both artists and national and international artistic agents.

Alongside the artistic residency, artist Filipa Tojal will also present a solo exhibition at the Escola das Artes, in Lisbon, scheduled for the second half of the year.
