LOCAL

School of Arts – Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (Campo de Ourique)

Based on the growing professionalization of curatorial practices and their centrality in the discourses of art historiography, cultural studies and global systems of artistic market, presentation and circulation, this course will seek to provide its participants with multiple perspectives on the different modalities of contemporary curation — independent and institutional —, as well as to promote a critical interpellation of the figure of the curator as a multidisciplinary agent of aesthetic organization and creation of situated, ethical and authorial thought. Likewise, it will debate issues that have put pressure on current public arenas and have manifested themselves decisively in the spheres of contemporary art — from feminist and decolonial movements to political, economic and environmental crises —, speculating from there on the transformations that curation can perform as an activity with a dissident and desecrating potential of material forms, knowledge, powers and recurrent, typified and mobilizing social distributions. In this sense, we also intend to address what an exhibition is or could be, what instruments are used to create and develop it, and what are the ways to present and experience it, challenging each student to come up with an idea/outline for an original exhibition project during the course. Methodologically, the 7 proposed sessions will move between group analysis and discussion of themes, texts and case studies presented by the instructor, moments of collective and individual tutoring, as well as visits to selected exhibitions and conversations with their authors: curators, programmers and/or artists. In the end, the objective is for each participant to have theoretical, practical and relational references, mechanisms and tools to map, navigate and, consequently, be able to participate in the world of contemporary art, enhancing the creation of a unique voice and perspective.
