The second session of Cinema Círculo will be dedicated to the film “Mafrouza”, a 5-part film directed by Emmanuelle Demoris and shot over two years in Mafrouza, a slum in Alexandria, Egypt, built on the site of a Greco-Roman necropolis . Starting from the first encounters with its inhabitants, “Mafrouza” tells the stories of some people who respond to each other in a polyphonic chronicle.

After visits to institutions such as MoMA (New York) or the International Film Festival in São Paulo, it now premieres in Portugal. This film was awarded the Golden Leopard at the 2010 Locarno Film Festival.

In this session, the parts “Mafrouza – Oh la nuit!” (1), “Que Faire?” (3), “Paraboles” (5), for a total of 7h30. The films will be shown with English subtitles. This session has the support of director Emmanuelle Desmoris and Escola das Artes – Autónoma and entry is free.

On the last Saturday of each month, Cinema Círculo aims to show works, formats and geographies that are underrepresented in the current distribution system and cinemas in Lisbon. A cinema that, for one reason or another, finds itself on the margins, without space, outside of a commercial logic that does not aim for profit, but that seeks reflection, debate and critical thinking.
